You may think that toothaches, which are often caused by cavities, are such a common problem that you can ignore any pain you may be having, but that is not always a good idea. Call your dentist if you have a toothache if:
  • your pain is so severe that you are limiting your activities
  • your toothache has lasted more than two days
  • you have a fever or an earache along with your tooth pain (this could mean that an infection is causing your toothache)
Also, be aware that sometimes a toothache or jaw pain is a symptom of a heart attack. If you have a toothache and are feeling pressure or pain or discomfort in your chest, nausea, shortness of breath, and/or arm or shoulder pain, call your doctor right away.
